At the 20th annual TechEd North America conference, Satya Nadella, Microsoft Server and Tools Business President to a crowd of 10,000 described how the cloud OS drives both the modern datacenter and enables the development and management of modern applications, demonstrating how customers can benefit from this transformation with agility, focus and lower costs.

Nadella also emphasized how Windows Server 2012, coupled with Windows Azure, complement each other, and empowers customers to create, migrate, deploy and manage applications across public, private and hybrid clouds.

"Built on decades of experience gleaned from running massive datacenters at scale, Windows Server 2012 is the cloud-optimized server OS for customers of all sizes, and Windows Azure, updated with new services and features, delivers both infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service capabilities," he said.

He also announced updates to the company's developer tools and availability of the next release of Windows Intune, the company's cloud-based solution for PC and mobile device management and security.

  • Windows Intune Version 3 : TechEd 2012First, the next release version 3 of Windows Intune, Microsoft's cloud-based solution for PC and mobile device management and security, is now available for download. In addition to management and security benefits, this new release adds people centric capabilities and upgrade rights to the latest version of Windows.

This release also includes a new company portal; more granular deployment functionality; and enhancements to alerts, policy, updates and remote tasks. And, it also comes the ability to download "licensed available line-of-business software applications" on devices running iOS and Android.

According to the documentation, the new Intune release will support Windows Phones running version 7.0 or later of the Windows Phone OS; iPads, iPad 2s and iPhones running iOS 4.0 or later; and Android-based phones devices running Android 2.1 or later. Howerver, Windows 8 won't be supported until after Windows 8 is released.

The new release is also integrated with Active Directory Domain Services and Windows Azure Active Directory, the cloud complement of Microsoft's directory service.

Windows Intune Version 3 is available here for downoad.

  • And, to help streamline and accelerate application development and deployment, a Public Preview of the Microsoft Team Foundation Service, is now available at http://tfspreview.com.

Team Foundation Service is an application lifecycle management tool hosted on Windows Azure, and features collaboration tools, a code repository, and powerful reporting and traceability tools to help teams more effectively manage software development.

  • Microsoft LightSwitch, will now render HTML5. "Integrating HTML5 into LightSwitch will enable developers using the tool to target any device or platform supporting HTML5," Microsoft said.

LightSwitch, codenamed "KittyHawk," is a rapid-application-development (RAD) tool targeted at fledgling coders interested in building business applications. Microsoft has positioned LightSwitch as a way to build business applications for the desktop, the Web and the cloud. It's a tool that relies on pre-built templates to make building applications easier for non-professional programmers. (It's so easy, it's like flipping a switch, the Softies have said when explaining the choice of final name for the product.)

The second version of LightSwitch is in beta, along with the Visual Studio 2012.

  • System Center Serice Pack 1 (SP1) CTP2 : TechEd 2012Finally, the second Community Technology Preview (CTP) for System Center 2012 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will be available for public download by next week, Nadella announced.
