Using Custom Search Engine (CSE), Google releasing today two improvements to sorting and filtering of search results in CSE.

First, CSE now supports UI-based results sorting, which you can enable in the Basics tab of the CSE control panel. Once you've updated the CSE element code on your site, a "sort by" picker will become visible at the top of the results section.

"By default CSE supports sorting by date and relevance. In the control panel, you can specify additional "sort by" keys that are based on the structure of your site's content, giving users more options to find the results that are most relevant to them. For example, if you've marked up pages for product rich snippets, you could enable sorting based on price as shown below," explains Roger Wang, Software Engineer:

Second, Google introducing compact queries for filtering by attribute.

Currently you can issue a query like [more:pagemap:product-description:search more:pagemap:product-description:engine] which will only show pages with a 'product-description' attribute that contains both 'search' and 'engine'.

Now, with a compact query, you can issue the same request as: [more:p:product-description:search*engine]

In other Google news, Google launched AdWords API v201109_1, a dot release which includes services to help API users incorporate some recent AdWords web interface launches into their applications.

New features include:

  • Keyword match properties NEAR_EXACT and NEAR_PHRASE, which allow API users to opt in/out of these match types.
  • LocationSyncExtension and the reports download service now have OAuth 1.0 support, bringing these services in line with others in the API.

As part of this dot release, "we are also launching a few other features that'll be available through an invitation-only beta. Similar to beta programs for the AdWords interface, the goal of this beta is to give developers earlier access to specific features, allowing us to incorporate feedback more quickly and innovate more effectively," posted AdWords API Team.

"Moving forward, we'll use dot releases to launch AdWords features more quickly. AdWords API v201109_1 does not start the sunset on prior versions, so you do not need to upgrade immediately," the team adds.
