WordPress 3.4 Beta 1 Released, Finall Version in May - Has 98 Versions Since .70 May 2003 Release

WordPress has been around since May 2003 and has grown leap and bound -- since its first release version .70 on May 27, 2003, the open source content management software has "98 version releases of WordPress to date," and more than 100 books published on WordPress since 2006.

According to a blog post by Lorelle VanFossen who has collected an impressive amount of stats and data regarding the usage of WordPress today, notes that according to founder, Matt Mullenweg, "WordPress has been downloaded 65 million since version 3 was released in June of 2010, and 14.7% of the top million websites are powered by WordPress."

WordPress 3.3 alone has been downloaded 12,179,538 times.

VanFossen also notes, that an average of 2.5 million pages served to 352 million people per month on WordPress.com, and (out of 2 job sites) an average of 8,615 WordPress-related are jobs posted each month.

Also, note that the WordPress today released the WordPress 3.4 Beta 1, and the final version will be released sometime in May.

"If all goes well, we hope to release WordPress 3.4 in May. The more help we get with testing and fixing bugs, the sooner we will be able to release the final version. If you want to be a beta tester, you should check out the Codex article on how to report bugs," Jane Wells posted on WordPress News blog.

  • Theme Customizer with Previewer
  • Flexible Custom Header Sizes
  • Selecting Custom Header and Background Images from Media Library
  • Better experience searching for and choosing a theme

And, here're under-the-hood changes:

  • New XML-RPC API for external and mobile applications
  • New API for registering theme support for custom headers and backgrounds
  • Performance improvements to WP_Query by splitting the query (Please test!)
  • Internationalization improvements (improved performance and locale support)
  • Performance and API improvements when working with lists of installed themes
  • Support for installing child themes from the WordPress Themes Directory
