Facebook officially launches its Facebook Messenger for Windows bringing the Facebook Chat functionality to desktop client that lets you persistently chat, receive notifications, and read your news feed from your desktop.
There's no support for voice or video chat, which is a bit odd since Facebook has a partnership with Skype.
A Mac version will follow shortly. Facebook says "For those of you on Macs, we are busy working on Messenger for Mac right now. Stay tuned." But the company declined to give us a timeframe for that one.
The Facebook Messenger Windows client currently requires Windows 7, and "will be expanded through Windows operating systems around the world over the next few weeks with upcoming support for Vista. However, company has no plans to for an XP version," the company said.
The Facebook Messenger lets you use Facebook without being on www.facebook.com. You will now be able to stay in touch anytime, no matter what you're doing, as it allows:
- Chat and message with your friends on Facebook
- See the latest updates from your friends in ticker
- Get quick notifications about what's going on
