Microsoft's official Windows 8 Twitter account @BuildWindows8 has confirmed the inevitable: Windows 8 Consumer Preview downloaded 1 million times since launch.

"One day later...one million downloads of the consumer preview," tweeted Building Windows 8.

To put this into perspective, Microsoft sold seven copies of the software a second in 2010, and, yesterday, gave away 11 copies a second.

On February 24, we reported about the possible Windows 8 SKUs revelaed through a HP driver document. Now, Windows8Beta while scrolling through Windows 8 Consumer Preview's registry found a list of SKUs for the operating system.

The registry keys indicate that there will be more than just three versions of Windows 8, in fact it could be more than the amount of SKUs for Windows 7.

When you take the new SKUs in the Windows 8 registry by themselves, this is what you get.

  • "EnterpriseEval" ? Windows 8 Enterprise
  • "prereleaseARM" ? Windows 8 ARM Edition
  • "prerelease" ? Windows 8 (standard)
  • "ProfessionalPlus" ? Windows 8 Professional

Windows 8 Consumer Previews revelas potential SKUs

Asus's global head of handheld devices, Benson Lin, speaking with Pocket-lint at MWC, said: "We are very, very, very close and work hard with Microsoft." When pressed for specifics on the company's Windows 8 tablet, Lin's response was cryptic, to say the least: "If you are Microsoft, which partner will you select? It is very simple."

Reinforcing the 'closeness' of the partnership, Lin offered a little insider knowledge about Microsoft's CEO: "Steve Ballmer only uses the Asus Ultrabook. I just came from meeting Microsoft last week, and they told me Ballmer only uses our Zenbook."
