Just hours after launching the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Microsoft also released its Server conuter part the Windows Server 8 Beta.

"Windows Server "8" delivers hundreds of new features and enhancements for transforming virtualization and cloud computing to help you reduce IT costs and deliver more business value. Within Windows Server "8" you will find exciting innovations in areas of virtualization, networking, storage, user experience, and a transition to Windows PowerShell to take scripting to a whole new level," Microsoft stated.

This is quite possibly the most significant release of Windows Server ever. As Jonathan Hassell in a Computerworld article remarks, Windows Server "8" "takes your breath away."

Windows Server "8" delivers value in four key ways:

  • It goes beyond virtualization technology by offering a dynamic, multitenant infrastructure to enable a complete platform for building a private cloud.
  • It delivers The Power of Many Servers, with The Simplicity of One offering you excellent economics by integrating a highly available and easy-to-manage multiserver platform.
  • It opens the door to Every App on Any Cloud. Windows Server "8" will be the broadest, most scalable and elastic web and application platform, giving you the flexibility to build and deploy applications on-premises, in the cloud, and in a hybrid environment.
  • It will Enable the Modern Workstyle by providing users with flexible access to data and applications virtually anywhere on any device while simplifying management and maintaining security, control, and compliance.

Microsoft also opened up several new evaluation resources area for Windows Server 8 on TechNet. On the Overview tab you'll see a couple of document links. If you are an IT Professional, you'll likely want to download the Windows Server "8" Beta Evaluation Guide. The product guides rock.
