Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd on Sunday announced that it has sold over 300 million mobile handsets for the first time in the company's history. The world's second largest handset maker by volume said in a statement it had broken its sales record by the end of last month.

Through end of September, Apple sold 56.1 million handsets, with some analysts estimated 30 million for the quarter, or less than one-third the number Samsung has sold already. In fact the 300 million sales mark was reached at the end of November, which means that that number could be much higher by the end of 2011.

Handset sales in 2010 were about 280 million.

Samsung said the company's flagship Galaxy S smartphone series -- Galaxy S and Galaxy S II -- contributed significantly to the results. The Android-powered Galaxy S II has now sold over 10 million units since Samsung launched the phone back in April. The phone only went on sale here in the US last September.

"We look forward to extending this success going into 2012," JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung's Mobile Communications Business, was quoted as saying.
