Burton Inc., Japan, developed a "True 3D Display" using Laser plasma technology. "By using our device, you can create 3D image in the mid-air or underwater wihtout using a screen using Aerial 3D," said Burton.

Burton says their laser-based system is the only one of its kind.

The current system projects 3D objects at 50,000 dots per second (up from around 1,000 in 2006) and with a frame rate of 10-15. The Aerial 3D works by focusing laser light, producing "plasma excitation from the oxygen and nitrogen in the air".

"Our display device uses the plasma emission phenomenon near the focal point of focused laser light. By controlling the position of the focal point in the x, y, and z axes, it displays real 3D images constructed by dot arrays in the air."

Burton will exhibit their 3D display in the central hall of 2010 international CES during 7-10 January.
