Microsoft Store Opened at University Village in Seattle

Microsoft opened its second Seattle-area store at University Village on October 20, 2011.

Rich Kaplan, Microsoft's cvp of customer and partner advocacy, gave away more than $2.2 million to local charities, including $1.875 million to the YMCA of Greater Seattle.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn attended the opening and thanked Microsoft for giving back to the community and hiring around 60 people to work at the University Village store.

"If Seattle is going to compete and thrive, we need Microsoft," McGinn said.

About 1,000 people lined the parking lot in front of the store, with about 100 of those camping out since as early as 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, most hoping to score tickets to the concert. Tickets were given away first come, first served. The concert, along with another featuring OneRepublic on Sunday, will be held in the parking lot in front of the store.

The Redmond company now has 12 stores nationwide, while rival Apple has more than 300, including six in the greater Seattle-Bellevue area.
