Amazon sent out press invitation for its conference slated for September 28 at 10 AM EDT. Aside from a mention of the time and date, it offers little else to chew on.

Could the Amazon tablet make its first appearance? If the rumors are true, Amazon has a 7-inch "media tablet" that runs a forked version of Android and will connect to all of Amazon's services, including its Appstore, Movies, TV, Music and of course eBooks.

It won't be true multi-touch but a 7-inch WiFi model is slated to sell for $250.

The press conference could also be used to announce any number of things, from a new version of the Kindle to a national rollout of their 7-11 delivery lockers.

Amazon shopping, Amazon Kindle ebooks, Amazon streaming movies and TV shows, and Amazon Cloud Player for managing and playing digital music were all features of the tablet snuck out to the site. On September 12th, word leaked out that Amazon was working to secure newspapers and magazines to offer their content on the device, too.

All of these data points are why it is assumed this media event will center around a new tablet.

That said, the announcement of a tablet couldn't come at more perfect time for Amazon: news of Barnes and Noble's new complement of Nook Color tablets has just begun to surface, and their 3rd generation Kindles can't stack up to shiny new hardware when the holiday season rolls around.

Recent reports from Gartner also indicate that if uncontested, the iPad will rule the tablet roost for the next few years.
