For those of you who missed this year's Black Hat conference - the third annual Microsoft Security Response Center Progress Report is now available for free download through Microsoft Download Center.

The report entitled ""Building a Safer More Trusted Internet through Information Sharing 2011", provides a 2011 update on the progress of key MSRC initiatives that share information to foster deeper industry collaboration, increase community-based defenses, and better protect customers," Microsoft states.

This year's report, which recaps (among other things) the expansion of Microsoft Active Protections Program and the launch of Microsoft Vulnerability Research (MSVR) third-party security advisory program in April, makes for excellent reading.

"This guide provides a 2011 update to the MSRC Information Sharing report. Over the past three years the MSRC has operated key security-related programs:

  1. Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP)
  2. Microsoft Exploitability Index
  3. MSVR
  4. Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) - that would collectively share more information with partners and customers. With these programs, customers have increased access to more effective countermeasures and additional information to better evaluate risks. This paper highlights the progress of each of these initiatives," the Redmond software company added.
