The hugely popular mobile game Angry Birds will be available in 3D later this year. LG's Optimus 3D phone will be the first to offer the game, said the Korean phone maker.

It will, however, be an "upscaled" version of the 2D version, rather than an entire new adventure. The game will be available from October.

Angry Birds centres around a group of birds being detonated to kill pigs who have stolen their eggs. Makers Rovio, the Finnish company behind the hugely popular game, has also said that it is looking at turning the company into "a major franchise that crosses over to other platforms -- from TV shows and movies to toys and comic books", according to the company's chief executive Mikael Hed.

Cinematic Trailer:

Talking to entertainment magazine Variety, Hed previously revealed that Rovio had been doing the rounds of the Hollywood movie studios in the hope that Angry Birds, which has been downloaded by iPhone and iPad users more than 6.5 million times, can be quickly turned into a film.

It has subsequently emerged that the firm will make the film in-house.
