Amazon is now offering Kindle Textbooks on renting with up to an 80% savings on Kindle devices and through the Kindle app on platform such as Windows and OS X PCs, iPads, iPhones and BlackBerry, Android and Windows Phone 7 devices.

"Tens of thousands of textbooks" are available for rent across those platforms, reads an Amazon page promoting the deal. You can choose a rental length between 30 and 360 days and extend your rental for as little as one day. The service will allow users to read the textbook on any Kindle enabled device. In addition, students will be able to synchronize annotations for viewing across all devices, even after the rental period has ended. The rental period can be extended by as little as one day. Students will also have the option to purchase the textbooks at any time. Per Amazon:

Kindle Textbook Rental is a flexible and affordable way to read textbooks. You can rent for the minimum length, typically 30 days, and save up to 80% off the print list price. If you find you need your textbook longer, you can extend your rental by as little as 1 day as many times as you want and just pay for the added days.

To rent a book, all you need to do is just:

  1. Download one of free Kindle reading apps for your PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android device, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry, or Kindle - wherever you'd like to read your textbook.
  2. Search for your textbook in the Textbooks Store or from the search bar. If a Kindle edition is available for rent, you'll see an option in the Formats section on the textbook page. Select this option.
  3. On the Kindle textbook page select your rental end date. Kindle textbooks can typically be rented for any length between 30 to 360 days - you pay only for the time you need and can extend or buy anytime.
  4. Click on "Rent now with 1-click" button to place your rental order.

In addition, students will have to be convinced of the service's usefulness. If students decide they need something other than what devices are available to them to properly use the material, they may give up quickly on electronic rentals. However if a student were to pair electronic rentals with the $114 Kindle With Special Offers deal, he or she could have a very convincing argument to get mom and dad to cough up the dough for a Kindle.
