Microsoft Third-Quarter Results Announced, Record Revenue Growth of 13% and Earnings Per Share of $0.61

Microsoft reported today its third-quarter revenue of $16.43 billion for the quarter ended Mar. 31, 2011, a 13% increase from the same period of the prior year.

"Operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $5.71 billion, $5.23 billion, and $0.61 per share, which represented increases of 10%, 31%, and 36%, respectively, when compared with the prior year period. Diluted earnings per share included a $0.05 tax benefit primarily related to an agreement with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to settle a portion of their audit of tax years 2004 to 2006," reports Microsoft.

  • 21% year-over-year revenue growth in the Microsoft Business Division, driven by the ongoing momentum of Office 2010, as well as double-digit growth in SharePoint, Exchange, Lync and Dynamics
  • 11%year-over-year revenue growth in the Server & Tools Division, the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth
  • 60% year-over-year growth in the Entertainment & Devices Division, driven by continued strong growth in Xbox 360, Xbox Live and Kinect.
