Microsoft is working on an HTML5 version of Hotmail version of Hotmail, slated for the Wave 5 release.
"The Softies are working on an HTML5 version of Hotmail with something that few people understand the consequences of: offline storage," my contact said. "They are planning on replacing the Windows Live Mail client with it," reports MJFoley.
But the offline storage concept is something to ponder -- especially when you remember that Google is working on taking advantage of HTML5's offline storage capability, as well. Google officials have said that they'll enable offline support for Google Docs via HTML5 (but still have provided no delivery timetable for doing so).
So what does all this mean? It means that Microsoft might be replacing Windows Live Mail (the client) with Hotmail in Wave 5. With Google also working on an HTML5 version Google Docs with offline support, we won't be surprised if Microsoft is doing the same for SkyDrive Wave 5. Clearly with HTML5, Microsoft might be having a little shift in their "software + services" strategy, inching away from the "software" side.
