Microsoft's Exchange team today ping about a problem that impacts Exchange management tools on servers running Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2008 SP2, when installed "KB 2449742: MS11-028: Description of the security update for the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2: April 12, 2011."

The symptoms of the problem are:

  • Exchange Management Shell doesn't start
  • Exchange Management Console doesn't start
  • There might be a crash in Exchange Mailbox Replication Service (it's not clear yet if this's related)
  • Event Viewer might have trouble opening

The following events could be logged in the Application event log:

  • Event ID: 1023

"While we're still investigating this problem, the failures seem to start after the .NET hotfix KB 2449742 (MS11-028) is installed. The only workaround that we've identified up to now is a removal of the hotfix," informs Microsoft.
