A new hack is surfaced that lets the iPad 1 mirror whatever is displayed on its display, like iPad 2, regardless of whether the app supports this feature through system APIs or not. With display mirroring, you can browser the web and chat in the comfort of your living room, play games on your big screen TV, check your email and so forth. Or, watch movies without the need for an AirPlay-enabled Apple TV.

It requires a jailbroken iPad 1 and Apple's Digital AV Adapter or VGA adapter to hook up the device to a big screen TV or a projector using HDMI or VGA connection. The hack involves changing a setting in the property list file of the Springboard app. This could be easily achieved by the latest untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak.

Here's a quick tutorial:

  • Once your iPad 1 is jailbroken, follow these steps:
    1. Navigate to system/library/coreservices/springboard.app
    2. Download the K48AP.plist file on your computer
    3. Add the string "display-mirroring boolean YES" and make sure the file looks like the image below:

    4. Upload the modified file back to the iPad (you can use an app like Cyberduck for this, and make sure OpenSSH is installed on the iPad), restart the device
    5. Start video mirroring using either the VGA or Digital AV Adapter.
