As you may recall, BlackBerry Protect is a free application on supported data plans -- the information stored on your BlackBerry smartphone will be kept secure in the event your BlackBerry smartphone goes missing.

In order to use BB Protect, you need to ensure that; you're using a BB with BlackBerry Device Software 4.6 or later; and that you've an active BB Internet Service data plan that supports BB Protect.

Finally, ensure that BB isn't activated on BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express. To see if your BB is activated on a BB ES product, complete the following steps:

  1. Select Options from the home screen
  2. Complete following based on which version of BB device software you using:
    • BB DS 4.x & 5.x -- Select Advanced Options, then Enterprise Activation
    • BlackBerry 6 -- Select Device, then Advanced System Settings, followed by Enterprise Activation
  3. If you're using BB DS 4.x or 5.x, review the Status field to determine if your BB is activated on a BB ES product.
  4. If you're using BB 6, review the Activated Accounts field as per the screenshots below to determine if the BB is active on a BB ES product. The image on the left displays a BB that is activated on a BB ES product, whereas the image on the right shows a BB that hasn't been activated.

     

If you install BB Protect on a BB that contains an IT policy or is activated on a BB ES, the following message will appear when you click on BB Protect icon. If you encounter this message and your BB isn't activated on a BB ES, this message is appearing as a result of your BB containing an IT policy.

In order to use BB Protect on your BB, the IT policy must be removed from your device. For info on how to remove an IT policy from your BB, please review "How to remove an IT policy from a BlackBerry smartphone" and follow Method 3 if you use BB DS for PC, and Method 4 if you use BB DS for Mac.
