Apple still hasn't delivered, but a third-party workaround called "Wi-Fi Sync 2.0" public beta for Mac users is released.

The 2.0 has two important new features: it will auto-detect Macs on your home network, and it offers syncing via 3G. Anyone who purchases WI-Fi Sync 1.1 from the Cydia Store can access the 2.0 beta right now, but right now that feature is only available for a small group of testers.

Wi-fi Sync 2.0

If you want to check out the latest app, here's what you need to know. First, you'll need to jailbreak your phone to use the app. The desktop client currently only supports Mac, not Windows, and you'll need to uninstall version 1.1 of the Mac software before running Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 beta.

The iPhone 2G isn't supported, nor is iOS 3.0. You'll also need to make sure the app is running on your Mac before iTunes launches. Finally, you can only test Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 beta if you've already purchased version 1.1 from the Cydia Store for $9.99.

How to Install

  1. Uninstall the previous Mac client (1.1a) first, if you've it installed. Download here
  2. Add the following source to Cydia, and install the Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 package: http://dl.wifisyncapp.com/apt
  3. Download the new Mac client from this link. It doesn't come with an installer, so I recommend that you move it to the /Applications folder.
  4. Keep checking Cydia for updates as the beta test progresses. You may also see update notifications on your Mac from time to time; I strongly recommend that you install these as quickly as possible.
