The video below, shows an update from Chris Pratley, the general manager of Office Labs, on where things stand with the various technology concepts envisioned in the video. In short, he said, they're working on a lot of it.

For e.g, Pratley said the design aesthetic from the video helped to inspire the Windows Phone team to work toward an integrated look and feel, as opposed to a grid of apps. Microsoft's Kinect motion-controller for Xbox is another example. And Pratley cited the new, thinner version of Microsoft Surface 2.0 (Sur40) for its similarities to some of the scenes in the video.

Among other things, Pratley cited the example of a Microsoft Research project exploring the possibility of getting a secondary display to leverage the accelerometer in a mobile device, similar to the way the man on the moving sidewalk uses an auxiliary screen in conjunction with his device.

In one way or another, he said, "everything you saw in that video does have some work going on."

Separately, other initiatives discussed by Pratley included Ribbon Hero, a game for learning Office features. He noted that the positive response from users has surprised some people at Microsoft internally, suggesting that the concept could be applied to other scenarios.
