Digitimes reports that Apple has ordered the BLUs (back light units) for the upcoming iPad 2. The 2nd generation iPad is expected to hit the market at the end of the Q1'2011 and suppliers in the supply chain are estimated to start shipments in the first quarter.

It's understood that Coretronic is the only BLU supplier of CMI for iPad 2, while LG Display is getting iPad 2 BLUs from Coretronic and Radiant Opto-Electronics.

These backlight units will reportedly be used in conjunction with LCD displays built by LG and Chimei Innolux. Apple's ordering BLUs means the iPad 2 won't feature an AMOLED display.

BLU shipments totaled six million units in November, up 14% on month, mainly from notebooks and monitors. Consolidated revenues for BLUs totaled NT$3.94 billion, remaining flat sequentially.
