Microsoft has hired CloudeMade and OpenStreetMap founder Steve Coast as "Principal Architect for Bing Mobile," as well as a kind of liason to the OpenStreetMap and other open source and open data projects.

According to anouncement, there are "more than 320,000 people" the OpenStreetMap community, who have built high quality maps for every country on earth.

As part of this new effort, Microsoft is providing access to Bing Aerial Imagery for use in the OpenStreetMap.

Microsoft says that Steve Coast "will help develop better mapping experiences for our customers and partners, and lead efforts to engage with OpenStreetMap and other open source and open data projects."

Also, Microsoft is working on new tools to better enable contributions to OSM.
