Enabling USB Storage for Windows Phone 7 has been detailed, showing that the phone can indeed be used as a USB drive for manually copying data without using the Zune software.

Windows Phone 7 USB Hack

The hack is simple and allows the user to use the phone on local machine as a "mass storage device" so they can manually load music and pictures onto the phone.

  1. Open the registry editor on your PC by typing regedit in your Start menu
  2. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB; search for ZuneDriver

Now you'll modify three entries (note, if you've multiple WP7 phones, you've to do it for each one)

    1. Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1
    2. Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
    3. Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1

Now, simply plug your phone in and you should see the phone show up in Explorer. Close down the Zune desktop app in order to modify the files. As you can see, you now have access to music, images and videos, allowing you to copy/paste. You can put any file you want in there, but of course, you can't access them on the device (e.g. Office docs). Overall, a nice little trick.
