Despite an Android onslaught, 'antenna-gate' and 'glass-gate', Apple has managed its way into the top five handset makers for the first time, bouncing Sony Ericcson out of the game as the Cupertino firm enjoys growing mind-share.

In details released by the IDC, it was confirmed that the cupertino company now sold just over 14.1 million phones this year compared to 7 million at the same time last year. Nokia still is in the first place with 110.4 million units shipped, Samsung at second place with 71.4 million and LG the third with 28.4 units.

Strategy Analytics estimate 327 million handsets were shipped worldwide in Q3 '10, growing 13 percent from a year earlier. Analyst Neil Mawston notes, "Apple was the star performer, as it jumped into the top five rankings for the first time."
