Washington state, listed a who's who of the region's technology companies among the corporate opponents of the tax. "Microsoft, Amazon, Dendreon, Inrix, Motricity, and Concur Technologies are among the companies that have contributed to the Defeat 1098 campaign or publicly stated their opposition to the plan, according to a news release distributed by the campaign."

The initiative has divided the ranks of the state's high-profile technology entrepreneurs and executives. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had already contributed to Defeat 1098 campaign, but Microsoft's official opposition is notable in part because Bill Gates Sr., is a chief proponent of the initiative, and his son has also indicated his support for the plan.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, is among the execs quoted by the Defeat 1098 group in its news release.
