Google Acquires Israeli Startup "Quiksee" - Location-based Interactive Media Content Company

Google is buying Quiksee, based in Or Yehuda, Israeli, for an estimated $10 million. Quiksee, also known as MentorWave Technologies, allows users to create location-based interactive media content. Its web-based content, the company says, "lets you quickly and easily create stunning virtual tours."

Quicksee makes it fairly simple for individuals to create "virtual tours" of locations, things and experiences. Quiksee's software allowed you to create interactive panoramic tours from your videos, without having to use a Street View camera. It's speculated that Google could "accept geo-tagged, 3D panoramas uploaded by consumers" to improve Google Maps. Obviously this's directed toward Google Maps/Earth (see second video below) but may go well beyond Maps to product tours and other applications as well.

The video below looks as though a Quicksee employee put together a demo of how Quicksee and Google Maps would integrate (perhaps to pitch the technology to Google). It gives us a bit of a glimpse into the future of Google Maps:
