Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console came out on top of the U.S. market for the third consecutive month in August, according to NPD Group data: "Xbox 360's result of 357,000 units sold for the month was more than 100,000 better than the nearest competitor, Nintendo Wii, at 244,000 units. Sony's PlayStation 3 came in at 226,000 units."

Xbox 360 "achieved significant year-over-year gains," but "sales softened versus what occurred in July," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "That said, with Halo: Reach coming to market next week, if hardware sales react in a similar fashion to what was experienced when Halo 3 was launched in Sep 2007, September could be a huge sales month for Xbox 360 hardware."

The report found the retail sales of video game equipment and software fell 10% last month.
