Check-ins will be made possible through an API for 3rd-party companies who'll integrate their data into Facebook and in turn permitting location-aware data to become a part of existing platform apps. API is being built out "hard core," while the internal deadline for it would possibly be next week although Facebook hasn't specified whether this could be met.

Facebook might also think about changing of thumbs-up type feature to "like," possibly preparing for integration of Facebook's ubiquitous "like" buttons.

The geolocation service could start with localizing events, as Facebook recently acquired events check-in service Hot Potato for about $10 million, which focused on letting members check into events rather than locations. Facebook's reaction to CNET was voiced by spokesman Larry Yu: "We're working on location features and product integrations, which we'll be launching in the coming months, and we'll share more details when appropriate."
