According to NPD Group, digital downloads make up 47.5% of all full game purchases "in 2009, 21.3 million PC Game full-game digital downloads were purchased online in U.S. compared to 23.5 million physical units purchased at retail during same period."

The report segments Web-based "retailer" in to two groups: "Casual Digital Retailers, which often focus on smaller, easily accessible games that typically utilize try-and-buy or advertising revenue models, and Frontline Digital Retailers, which often focus on titles also offered in retail stores as physical purchases."

Report also, indicates that "Social network gaming gained 4.8 million from Q3'09 to Q4'09. Free mobile gaming also grew; 30% increase in iPhone and iPod Touch gaming from Q2'09 to Q4'09; 97% of those who downloaded a game from app store downloaded free version."
