Bill Gates and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla are backing EcoMotors International, a Troy, Michigan company who's developing an "opoc engine" designed to deliver 50% greater fuel efficiency than conventional automobile engines. "OPOC stands for Opposed-Piston Opposed-Cylinder, and the combustion engine is designed to operate on a number of fuels from gasoline to ethanol to diesel."

"The opoc engine can be an important step in providing affordable, low-emission transportation for the developing world," said Gates.

Wall Street Journal and Xconomy peg the investment around at $23 million.
