System Center Essentials 2007 gathers agent data through predefined objects, monitors and filtering rules installed through Management Packs. MPs installed during SCE installation provide basic functionality, with additional MPs available through MP Catalog. Data is then gathered by various scripts & detection methods outlined within these MPs, and inserted into SCE's databases for reference & reporting. To keep track of information, SCE installs with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Even though SQL Server 2005 EE is conveniently included, it also includes a database size limitation of 4GB (log files excluded). Depending on variables like number of users, number of MPs installed, number of day's data is kept, it's possible for SCE database to reach its 4GB capacity within a few months time.

"Best Practice" to consider when developing a server maintenance plan would be incorporating WSUS Server Cleanup Wizard into monthly maintenance "to-do" list, that allows you to remove out-of-date update files, superseded updates and computers that're no longer available.
