Borders announced “it’s now taking pre-orders for the Kobo eReader and next month debuting its Kobo powered ‘eBook store and apps’-- as a device-neutral, rich-content provider, Borders will sell ‘Kobo eReader’ along with a variety of other eReading devices in Borders stores in special digital shops called Area-e launching in August. At $149.99, Kobo eReader is among the most affordable eReaders available, giving consumers an economical introduction to eReading via a stylized, easy-to-use, eInk based reader. To get consumers started with their eReading experience, Kobo eReader will come preloaded with 100 classic books. Though Borders hasn’t published its supported format, as of now Kobo only supports ePub, PDF, and Adobe DRM e-books. Unfortunately, Kobo doesn’t have Wi-Fi or 3G wireless connectivity. It does, however, have a Bluetooth radio, which lets users pair their Kobo with BlackBerry smartphones running Kobo eReader app. Like Kindle, this lets users pass their content over to smartphone, other specs include: 1 GB built-in storage, SD card slot, promises a 2-week charge or 8000 page flips, and weight nearly 100 grams. The Kobo eReader will begin arriving at customer's homes beginning June 17, in time for Father's Day.
