At CeBIT, Intel announced a new platform for future home server hardware, “Bandon,” that combines the chip giant’s Atom single-core D410 or dual-core D510 processor with Intel ICH9R Chipset and 82801IR I/O Controller and support for 12 USB ports, 2 x eSATA with port multiplier and Gigabit Ethernet. That vision is becoming reality with the first “Bandon” motherboards coming to market the “Supermicro X7SPA-HF,” designed specifically for home server self-builders, X7SPA-HF combines low power processing, from dual-core Intel Atom D510 1.6GHz, with storage capacity and future expandability. Mini-ITX form factor crams in 6 SATA ports for hard drives, 8 USB 2.0 ports for expandable storage (2 rear and headers for 5 additional ports up front, as well as a USB Type A port) and twin Gigabit LAN ports. Memory up to 4GB RAM (unbuffered, non-ECC DDR2 667MHz) is supported across two slots. Graphics is handled courtesy of an integrated Matrox G200eW video chip. If you want RAID, RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 is supported. If you’re building a mini-ITX home server, X7SPA-HF should definitely be considered in your selection. It’s shipping now at around $200/£180.
