Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server virtual machines display an Operating System property of 'Unknown.' If the Operating System property is set manually, it will revert to 'Unknown' following an automatic SCVMM refresh. There’re no errors associated with this change. Resolution: First close VMM Administrator Console; Stop VMMService windows service on VMM server computer; Take FULL database backup of VMM database; Edit database and insert columns that’ll allow VMM to recognize OS name for Win2k; Install Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express on same computer where VMM database exists; Open SQL Management Studio, select VMM database and run two SQL insertion statements/scripts below. That should change VMM knowledge of supported guest OS and also add Win2k to list (for both Server and Advanced Server); Once sql script complete, restart VMMService and open Admin Console. Wait for appx. 30 minutes to 1 hour and your VMs will display proper Win2k OS in Admin Console. Make sure VMs are running during this time, otherwise guest OS version willnot be discovered.
