T9 developer Cliff Kushler has developed a new interesting new input technology for keyboard entry method for touch-screen devices, called “Swype,” – only officially available on Windows Mobile. However, a preview version of Swype for Android has leaked. This version of Swype supports high res devices such as the Droid and has a surprising amount of polish for early version.

Installation:

  1. Download and install Astro file manager from Android Marketplace
  2. Download Swype-trial-release.zip, and extract, will give you a file called “[mfhs]Swype-SwypeReference-WVGA854-trial-release.0.35.3959.apk”
  3. Copy APK file to your handset’s SD card
  4. On your Android handset, go to Settings > Applications > and check the box next to Unknown Sources
  5. Use Astro to browse for apk file on your SD card, install it.
  6. Go to Settings > Language and Keyboard. Enable Swype keyboard.
  7. You should now be able to switch between standard keyboard and Swype keyboard by tapping-and-holding on any text input field.
