At PDC 2009 in Los Angeles, Microsoft announced not only release of version 4.0 of .NET Micro Framework, but also said that it's releasing source code for .NET Micro Framework under an Apache 2.0 license, which's already being used by community within embedded space. Including source code for almost all of product also ensures that developers now also get access to Base Class Libraries that were implemented for .NET Micro Framework and CLR code itself. However, both TCP/IP stack and Cryptography libraries aren’t included in source code. Program Manager Colin Miller told this’s because the TCP/IP stack's third party software that Microsoft licenses from EBSNet, so we don’t have rights to distribute. If someone needs to access source code for TCP/IP stack, they can contact EBSNet. As for Cyptography libraries, they’re not included in source code because they’re used outside of scope of .NET Micro Framework. Customers who need to've access to code in cryptography functions’ll find that these libraries can be replaced. Microsoft's also forming a community of interested and involved members to help shape future direction of product, Miller said.
