Google seems testing some new ad units on newly lauched Place Pages: “We’ve found a number of Google Places advertisements appearing on searches for ‘Brand + Product Category’ and include a link to a competitive local retailer. The advertisements represent an entirely new AdWords unit that we hadn’t seen before and seem to be designed specifically for Google Places,” said Naffziger.

Also, Google ads were spotted within on Google Maps on iPhone and iPod touch. These sponsored paid listings appear alongside organic results when user’s perform relevant searches, helping local customers find appropriate businesses from their mobile phone. When users click on a sponsored listing to view more details, some brief ad copy is present at the top of the page, noted Anthony Avolio.
