Microsoft has revealed a new research and development project named Marlowe, after the detective Philip Marlowe that Mr. Chandler made famous in novels like “The Big Sleep” and “The Long Goodbye.” Microsoft, in fact, had “The Big Sleep” in mind when it came up with Marlowe, as the company is trying to study more efficient ways of turning servers off and on over the course of a day.
