Google has updated Gmail’s contacts manager to make it easier to organize the contacts; you want merge, and get rid of some of the cruft. One of the most significant limitation of the contact manager was that most of the contact fields weren't searchable. This problem has now been addressed and contact search now works much better: instead of just searching contact names and email addresses, it now includes phone numbers, notes fields, and mailing addresses as well.
