Microsoft was suggested not to brand Home Basic as Vista

Documents unsealed in an ongoing class-action lawsuit show that the Windows Product Management Group recommended in August 2005 that Home Basic should "carry the Windows brand name without the Vista generation name." They also suggested that Windows Starter not carry the Vista brand. Read the documents (PDF).
