Live Search blog posted an article to help you in optimizing your site for higer ranking in search engine. Here’re some tips:

  • Always use Canonical URLs. To reduce the risk of duplicate URLs and diluting your link equity, the following should be considered for your URL structure:
    • Add or remove the trailing /
    • Remove the index or default from the URL
    • Convert your URL text in to lower case
    • Remove query string variables
    • Remove Port Numbers
    • Avoid exposing secure HTTPS version
  • If your URLs are messed up, use 301 redirect to the canonical form. Refer this article on .htaccess, 301 Redirects & SEO.
  • Use a consistent linking convention, never deviate from that form in your sitemap or your internal link structure.
  • Don't link to multiple versions of the page
  • Use absolute links
  • While there are other issues that can increase the number of URLs, solving the issue of canonicalization will help both your customers and us at Live Search get more of the URLs that matter.

Never before I've heard that "Use absolute links" will help rank a website. I've done some SEO experiments and for me using absolute links hasn't made any difference.
