Issue: When attempting to do an installation of the Microsoft Application Virtualization Management Server on Windows Server 2008, the installer may present the following error message:

The Installation program was unable to create the required IIS virtual directory

This typically happens towards the end of the installation procedure and once it occurs the entire install process rolls back.

Cause: The following IIS 7.0 Role Features are not installed:

  • IIS6 Management Compatibility
  • IIS Management Scripts and Tools

These are optional components that can be installed under the Internet Information Server category of Windows Server 2008.

Resolution: Ensure these Role Features are installed prior to installing the Microsoft Application Virtualization Management Server on Windows Server 2008.
