Windows 7: Top 5 features Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard lacks
Windows 7 packs a long list of unique end-user features that even OS X Snow Leopard may lack, as far as we know today. Take the new taskbar in Windows 7. Although it adopts OS X's Dock philosophy, Microsoft made it its own with live thumbnail task previews and other nifty little details. Let's not forget about multi-touch, Libraries or Device Stage. We can’t deny that Windows 7 delivers several innovative features that make today’s OS X look old. The fact that Apple decided hit the feature break in Snow Leopard, could cost the company dearly. Can Microsoft finally beat Apple at its own game? Here are our top five Windows 7 features we believe Apple should copy from Microsoft.
- Multi-Touch
- Windows 7 taskbar
- Libraries
- Play To and Windows Media Center
- Device Stage

Isn't libraries just smart folders, with columns selected appropriately? Although, I do agree, Apple should do this by default. However, the whole Apple philosophy (of using databases to manage multimedia files, makes this unnecessary.
Multitouch is a great addition for tablets, but not really for laptops and desktops. However, I agree, Apple needs to add this, especially since they popularized its usage in commercial devices.
I have not used the taskbar, but I wonder how annoying it will get to have a bunch of huge thumbnails pop up everytime you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen? Also, personally, I believe expose, combined with screen corners in all macs, button configurations in the mighty mouse, and 4 finger gestures in the new laptop trackpads beats this hands down.
I think some of the window management stuff Windows 7 has is pretty neat though (like the shaking over the titlebar to temporarily make everything else transparent). Apple needs to improve window management to compete with that sort of stuff.
