Have you ever considered “how much amount of data is saved inside your image file by the image editor? while optimizing your GIFs, PNGs and JPGs images while still keeping them visually pleasing.” There’re lot of free tools that strip this info from the files for you and squeeze extra optimization without affecting the look.

Yahoo exceptional performance team released an interesting cloud-based tool called “Smush.it” that optimizes images for publishing on the web. With Smush.it, you can choose to upload your images directly to the service with a image URL, or use a Firefox plugin or bookmarklet that analyzes a whole page at once. Smush.it provides a one-stop shop for compressing images and works with JPGs, PNGs, GIFs, and animated GIF files.

As Yahoo points out, there are already many image editing tools on the market that perform similar functions. Smush.it, however, automates this process and works for a variety of popular file formats, taking a lot of the hassle out of the process. Smushit will show you how many bytes you can save by removing cruft from the images and gives you all the images as a zip file to replace them on your site.
