Skytap announced the availability of an API that blends its Virtual Lab platform with customers’ on-site resources. Virtual Lab provides hosted virtual machines, and it supports hypervisors from Citrix and VMware, with support for Microsoft’s Hyper-V planned.

Virtual Lab is prepopulated with a library of virtual machines. However, customers may customize the virtual machines to match their hardware environments, and they can upload their own virtual machines, said Ian Knox, director of product management. The default virtual machines are configured for major applications, databases and operating systems, according to Skytap.

The API provides VPN connectivity to expose virtual machines on-site as if they were in the same environment, said Knox. The services have a REST interface and static IP addresses.
