Fujitsu Siemens Computers has launched what it claims to be the world's first zero watt monitor. The new power-saving technology will be incorporated initially into the IT vendor's Scenicview Premium Line ECO range in the 20-inch P20W-5 ECO and the 22-inch P22W-5 ECO.

The technology works by triggering the power supply to disconnect from the mains when the monitor powers down, said the firm. Power is restored to the display by a small electrical pulse when the PC next sends output to the monitor.

The new monitor could save UK firms approximately £6 per monitor per year, based on typical daily usage of eight hours and 16 hours standby throughout a year, said Fujitsu Siemens. Regular monitors continue to draw power of between one and six watts, even in standby mode, the firm said.
