Migrating WordPress from DreamHost to Media Temple (gs) Grid Server – Part 2
Step 4
How to avoide downtime during DNS propagation
This is the question, that has been asked many time, if you also want to keep your blog running during DNS propagation. Just do the following:
- Go to your oldserver and open wp-config.php file
- Edit DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD with your Media Temple (newserver).
- Edit DB_HOST value with your newserver databse host name
mt (gs) Grid-Service users, Media Temple provides you two database server host “internal” — this goes in wp-config.php on your (gs) Grid-Service setup, and “external” — this you’ll enter here in oldserver wp-config.php. Please check your account activation email for correct details.
- Save and exit.
Your oldserver is now using database on your Media Temple account (newserver), just clear your browser cache and navigate your blog and make some comment to verify your setup. If all is well, then proceed to final step, else check your oldserver wp-config.php file for correct details.
Step 5
Name Server change
This is our final step, we’re going to modify DNS entries on our oldserver to point to Media Temple. I’ll show you how to do this under your old DreamHost account. I’m assuming, you’ve registered your domain with DreamHost, otherwise please reffer your domain registrar domain control panel.
- Log into your DreamHost control panel and select Manage Domains on the left.
- Click DNS on the domain
- In the name servers block, enter ns1.mediatemple.net and ns1.mediatemple.net in the first two boxes and ensure the other name server entries are blank.
- Click the “Set these nameservers”
- Wait patiently - your DNS propagation begin….
That’s it! go and browse your blog, make some new entries.
Welcome! on Media Temple (gs) Grid-Service.
