Migrating WordPress from DreamHost to Media Temple (gs) Grid Server – Part 2
Pre-installation set up: FTP & SSH
- Open your FTP client and create a new account from the account activation details.
Note: mt users, you’ll need to set up your new FTP account with connection type as “SFTP over SSH” to set correct file permissions, and hidden files (.htaccess) listing. Other hosting users, can create normal FTP account.
- For connecting to server using SSH, I use Putty, if you’re using Putty, just fire-up and create new connection for your mt (gs). If you’re new, please follow the following steps:
- Download PuttySSH, save it to a local folder, and create shortcut.
- Double-click on the putty.exe program or shortcut.
- In the Host Name field, enter the domain name or IP address of your hosting service from your Service Activation letter.
- Select SSH as the Protocol.
- Click Open. You will be prompted to accept the key for the server used for encrypting the communications. Click Yes.
- Enter your username and password provided in your Service Activation letter.
Note: If you're using it for the first time, create another SSH account for your old hosting service.
Now our new account on mt (gs), FTP, and SSH is ready for files tranfer and installation.
Step 2:
In this part, we’ll cover following:
- Backup all WordPress installation files & folders
- Backup of other files & folders
- Tranfering files to new host
- Testing WordPress installation on new host
- Name Server Changes / DNS propagation
Important: Backup of WordPress installation files & folders, MySQL database, and other files & folders, downloading the files to local disk and re-upload via FTPing is quite time comsuming, even if you’ve smaller setup. So I’m skipping normal FTP to a server-to-server FTP transfer, which requires shell access(SSH) on each host (your old host and new mt (gs)).
We’ve already covered SSH part above, so we can proceed now.
