If your budget for a new notebook doesn't exceed $400 and you don't care for the tiny keyboards on Asustek's Eee PC and the OLPC foundation's XO laptop, you may be in luck. Dell has reduced the price of its Vostro 1000 notebook to $399 in preparation for Black Friday. That $399 won't get you an ultraportable system or a warm fuzzy feeling for sponsoring a child in the developing world, but it will get you a full-sized notebook with a 15.4" display and a dual-core processor.

The Vostro 1000 packs a 15.4" wide-screen display with a 1280x800 resolution, a dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-53 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, 1GB of DDR2-533 RAM, Radeon Xpress 1150 integrated graphics, a 120GB hard drive, a DVD burner, 802.11g Wi-Fi, and either Windows XP Home Edition or Windows Vista Home Basic (the upgrade to Vista Home Premium is an extra $29). The system does weigh in at 6.26lbs with a thickness of 1.4", so it's not exactly in the same category as the Eee PC or XO. However, it has the merit of packing far more punch per dollar than either of those two systems. And it can burn DVDs.
