The new Zunes are out—mostly. While availability of the 4GB and 8GB flash models is excellent, the black 80GB hard drive model has been hard to find. Microsoft assures us that “high demand” is to blame.
Our review of the flash models showed them to be attractive and competent players, but with styling reminiscent of an earlier generation of iPod nano and a fatter size to boot. They’re nice, but the Zune 80 looks to hit the sweet spot with its large storage area, premium in-ear headphones, glossy black finish, glass screen, and the attractive Zune interface. It’s also 30 percent smaller than the original Zune 30, which remains on sale but has increasingly come to resemble a music-playing brick over the last year.
